Southern Asia is the home of galangal root, which is a spice. It is related to ginger and turmeric and has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years.
Galangal powder is the dried and ground galangal root, which is the underground part of a tropical shrub in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It is used in Cambodian, Indonesian, Laotian, Malaysian, Thai, and Vietnamese cooking. It can also be used in both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine to make herbal medicines. Often confused with ginger, even though the two have very different tastes and looks.
There are two main types of galangal. The Greater Galangal, or Alpinia galangal, is from Indonesia. The Lesser Galangal, or Alpinia officinarum, is from China. These two species are different in size, shape, and taste, but both are used to add flavor to food. Greater Galangal is used in many southeast Asian dishes, but Thai food is where it is most often found. Most of the time, Lessor Galangal is used in Southeast Asian sambals and spicy curry pastes in the same way that ginger is used. We have the Lesser Galangal in stock.
Traditional medicine has used galangal root to treat a variety of illnesses, and more and more scientific studies back up these uses.
◉ It Helps Fight Inflammation- Galangal's anti-inflammatory power is linked to calming inflammation all over the body, as well as keeping you from getting old too quickly. Gingerols, which are anti-inflammatory, stop prostaglandin from being made. This is why some experts think it may help people with arthritis.
◉ Strengthens Immune System - Galangal has a lot of Vitamin C and more than a dozen antioxidants, like alpine and galangin, which make it a good way to boost your immune system. Also, research showed that 1′S-1′-acetoxychavicol acetate (ACA), which was taken from the roots of Alpinia galangal, stops HIV-1 from multiplying.
◉ It increases Sperm Count and Motility- Galangal is used as an aphrodisiac in the Middle East, and it is often used to treat menstrual problems in South-East Asia. There needs to be more research on this topic, but a study from 2014 showed that ethanolic extract of A. galanga increased rat spermatogenesis by a lot.
A daily supplement of pomegranate juice and galangal root has also been shown to make sperm move three times faster.
◉ Galangal is a Natural Antimicrobial- Studies have shown that the essential oils that come from both dried and fresh galangal rhizomes can stop bacteria, yeast, fungi, and parasites from growing. One of the monoterpenes in the essential oil of galangal, called terpinen-4-ol, is antimicrobial against Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Clostridium perfringens can all be killed by the acetoxychavicol acetate (ACA) in galangal. Galangal is better at killing Staphylococcus aureus than turmeric and ginger.
